Bear Viewing Tours in Katmai National Park, Alaska

The All-important Boots!

Hip boots are a necessary piece of equipment for accessing the Brown Bears' various habitats; intertidal areas, wetlands, lagoons, beaches, rivers and streams. As all these names imply, there is water and often it is at knee high level. We may only be in knee high water for a few seconds or a minute, but it still comes in over the short boot and it is very cold and will make the rest of your day less enjoyable. Not good. I do not like getting my feet wet unless there is a hot sauna near by and I am sure you won't either. Please bring a good fitting pair of hip boots or waders.

There will be places we visit that hip boots are not necessary and you will enjoy wearing your knee boots that are going to fit perfectly, because you tested them before you got on the boat, right? Some of you who are hikers will want to bring tennis shoes or light hiking boots for more aggressive hiking and climbing.

We do have some hip boots on board, but odds are they won't fit you well, so do not rely on our supply. Also we strongly urge you to bring several layer combinations of socks and a couple of pair of felt insoles to ensure a good fit. They are not expensive and will be worth their weight in gold.

Hip and knee boots are available in Homer at; Ulmers Drug and Hardware on Lake Street in the Lakeside Mall. The phone number is 907-235-8594. They typically have sizes 2-13 men's knee high at around twenty dollars and hip boots at around thirty dollars. If you want to buy your own and fit in town (not a bad idea) I will buy them from you at half price or you can keep them for next year's tour. The Kachemak Gearshed also has boots. Their phone number is 907-235-8612. We recommend calling ahead to check availability.

If you have any questions please call us, thanks.
